A five year old student in Texas with cerebral palsy is denied her walker at school. Lakay Roberts has cerebral palsy and needs her walker to assist her mobility. Her teacher told her she can no longer bring her walker because it collapsed in the parking lot. The school is concerned it will harm other students.
Her mother recorded the conversation that the school personnel had telling her mom that she can't bring it. She put it on YouTube. She is preparing a law suit.
The Texas law states that a child has a right for a least restrictive environment to get them around in school. In this case, it would be a walker.

ADA would love to get a hold of this one, for sure!!!!! It would make a good cover story!!!!! Everyone needs to have a disability at some point in their lives to understand the accommodations it takes to keep going in a world that looks at them and thinks we are all unworthy of help. So sad even the school systems still have trouble accommodating the students they say HAVE to go to school!!!!
ReplyDeletewhat a nightmare. I experienced this kind of prejudice as a fifth grader, and it was traumatic to say the least. Tweeted!
